Labradoodles FAQ

What is meant by “multigen” or F1?

Labradoodles are a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. Puppies resulting from this breeding are called “F1” or First Generation. Many breeders will breed an F1 to another Poodle in order to achieve a more consistent and allergy-friendly coat. Puppies resulting from this breeding may be referred to as “F1B” (B means backcross) or F2. Continuing to breed Labradoodles to Labradoodles or Poodles will eventually result in puppies referred to as “multigen”.

Do Labradoodles shed?

Some do, and some don’t. There are several types of coats:

  • Hair coat – Most often you will see a hair coat in an earlier generation Labradoodle. These coats do shed.
  • Fleece coat – Fleece coats sometimes shed. A fleece coat is wavier than a hair coat, but not as curly as a wool coat.
  • Wool, or curly coat – A wool coat does not shed. It does require the most upkeep of the 3 coats.

What sizes are available?

Labradoodles come in three sizes…Miniature, Medium, and Standard:
  • Miniature is 12 to 16 inches tall at the shoulders, and 22 to 33 pounds.
  • Medium is 17 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders, and 33 to 42 pounds.
  • Standard is 21 to 24 inches tall at the shoulders, and 44 to 90 pounds.

What should I feed my dog?

I feed my dogs a raw diet. The benefits of this diet are wonderful: clean teeth, shiny coat, and they poop less than dogs fed on kibble. But especially, they LOVE their food! I will not require my customers to feed a raw diet, but I will “hound” them until they do!

If you choose to feed kibble, please feed your dogs a premium food. The best source I know to research these is the Whole Dog Journal.

I urge you to do your homework before you adopt any puppy. Research your breeder. Ask what health testing is done, and what warranty is offered. I cannot stress enough how important this is! Ask for references. Owning a dog is a commitment that may last 15 years or more. Your dog will love you no matter what. You should provide a loving home, proper training, a premium diet and quality time.
